Summary:

The Crisis Consultant provides crisis intervention, risk assessment, and mental health services in the Emergency Department. Services include developing safety plans and providing referral/resource information to patients and families in a behavioral health crisis. This position provides consultation to and coordination of care of patients in crisis in consult with the Emergency Department healthcare team and the on-call Psychiatrists.

Responsibilities:

• Assists emergency room team in a consultant role to provide expert clinical care to patients and families presenting to the ED in mental health / behavioral crisis.
• Responds to an Emergency Department request for consultation within one hour of request.
• Assess the current mental status, risk for self-harm and risk for harm to others of the person in crisis.
• Makes recommendations to the physician/psychiatrist regarding need for involuntary or voluntary hospitalization.
• Provides follow-up with outpatient therapist and appropriate referrals.
• Communicates decisions and recommendations to the client and to other members of the treatment team.

Education and Experience Requirements:

• Master’s degree in social work or related field; or RN with a Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN)
• PREFER: Master’s degree in nursing (MSN)
• Three (3) years of psychiatric experience, or relevant clinical experience
• Familiar with trauma informed care as well as the basics of responding to acute crisis situations
• NYS license in one of the following: Psychologist, Behavioral Analysist, Marital and Family Therapist, Mental Health Counselor, Social Worker
